Course Description

Lu Ross Academy is proud to launch the first Barbering program in Ventura County. The Barbering program emphasizes the importance of hands-on training. We know you will make mistakes – we expect you to make mistakes. That is how people learn – from correcting their mistakes.

When a student encounters any difficulty or is not sure what to do, our talented instructors are there to step in and assist. It’s at that point that the maximum education takes place. We know our system works – that’s why Lu Ross Academy was voted Best Haircut under $20 by the readers of the Ventura County Reporter for three years in a row! Our State Board classes have set the standard in the industry.

We want all our graduates to pass their exam the first time. If you don’t pass the first time, you can attend additional Board classes at no extra charge. We’ll discuss with you how to solve whatever problem you had the first time. The curriculum goes far beyond the State Board requirements. Learn advanced techniques and use your creativity. Barbering students receive additional classes from the Cosmetology Department in hair color, bleaching and hair-cutting. Continuous practical applications, lectures, testing and evaluations are used to meet the course objectives. The goal is to make our Barbering graduates world class professionals who can perform great men’s services as well as women’s.

The Lu Ross Academy Barbering program is located in a newly remodeled building in downtown Ventura which is 2 blocks distance from the main campus. The address of the Barbering School is 93 South Chestnut Street, Ventura, CA 93001.

There are hundreds of colleges offering a myriad of certificates and degrees in cosmetology but selecting the best California Cosmetology School can be a difficult choice to make. To study and get a license as a cosmetologist requires professional education program at a licensed and state accredited Cosmetology school. It is only after you have been conferred the degree that you can get employment as a cosmetologist or open your own beauty salon. However, the decision to enter a particular California Cosmetology school can put you in a dilemma.

If you have been looking at the syllabi of different California cosmetology schools, most of these academic institutions offer a generalized curriculum for beginners but have a higher specialization when a degree is needed as a licensed cosmetologist. All of the states need require that you have a license to practice and if you plan on opening your own salon or get employed, you will need a degree or diploma from an accredited California cosmetology school, as a prerequisite to the state license.

Tips to consider before seeking admission

Additionally, not all California cosmetology schools are accredited and licensed so it is best to research and shortlist only those schools that are approved by National Accreditation Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences. It is good to ask questions, consider the financial aid that you can qualify for and if the school offers the specialization you are looking for. Any course that has not been approved by NACCAS will not hold valid after you complete the program or you may be disqualified when you seek the license.

Before you join a cosmetology program, take a tour of the facility, talk with the admissions department and schedule a visit. You’ll need to join a California cosmetology school that offers placement, is on the list of the NACCAS and teaches in real time. Browse through the curriculum of the beauty and cosmetology academies to see which suits your profile and interest.

For most of the people, a beautician is assumed to be just hairdressers but that is a myth. Though hair styling is one aspect of the beautician’s career, they are certified to offer personal skin and nail care services which can positively attribute to an individual’s appearance. A beautician does make-up, repairs hair damage, does manicures and pedicures, removes unwanted hair and enhances the look of the person. Basically, a beautician plays the role of an educator when they teach customers to treat dry skin, cure brittle nails, and hair styles.

However, just like any other profession, beauty professionals and beauticians have to complete a professional training program to get their state license before they can be employed or start their own beauty salon. However, there are different specializations within the broad categorization of the term beautician. Some people specialize in hair styling and hair cutting, coloring and restoring hair while other get into nails care and art. These nail technicians’ specialize in repairing natural nails, art, application and maintenance of false nails. While those beauticians specializing in make up application, beauty makeovers and special effects makeup are in demand in salons and studios.

Education as a beautician

There are numerous cosmetology and beauty programs offered by community colleges and specialized beauty and cosmetology institutes all over USA. Most of the training programs for becoming a beautician have a term of 9 months to 2 years and usually cover a specialization in cosmetology. Usually the curriculum covers various aspects of hair, skin, nail care, makeup application and a complete knowledge of the different chemicals is also provided. This is important as hair coloring and styling, makeup require quite a number of chemicals and students are taught methods of using these safely. Additionally, beauticians and cosmetologists need to identify and learn about different types of skin, nails and hair, conditions and methods to practice hygienic practices.

Other requirements that can help a beautician are good communication, marketing, accounting and sales skills as self-employment are common. However, it is best to study at an accredited college or cosmetology institute as having a license after passing the state examination is important.

Why study as a beautician at Lu Ross Academy

Though there are numerous cosmetology and beauty courses that are taught at Lu Ross Academy and if you are looking for an NACCAS accredited beauty course, we’ll be happy to help you. With over 56 years in the beauty industry, we work with some of the best beauty industry partners such as MAC Cosmetics, Wella, Murad and many other renowned names. Additionally, Lu Ross beauty experts work at all levels with the students to help them grow and learn to develop their own style irrespective of whether it is hair cutting, nail art or skin care. We give them ample opportunities to work with real customers in real situations to help them deal with all types of situations, giving them both practical hands-on training along with theoretical information.

With over 14,000 square feet of facilities, which includes numerous classrooms, clinical area and wet room, each students gets ample time to read and practice to become a top of the line beautician or cosmetologist.

Different professions to pursue in the beauty industry

If there is one thing that can be said about the beauty industry is that it is filled with numerous opportunities for the aspiring professional in search of a lucrative and rewarding career in the cosmetology field. Beauty schools feature a variety of courses that teach the study and application of a number of different beauty treatments including:

Cosmetics

Electrology

Hair Coloring

Hairstyling

Manicurist

Pedicurist

Skin Care

As you can see, you can study several beauty school courses in order to become a specialist in specific areas.

Professions in the beauty industry

The following list of professions is just a few that are available and worth considering while taking your beauty school courses and getting your career training:

Electrologist – performs permanent hair removal services using an electrolysis machine

Esthetician – specializes in skin beautification (typically works in salons and spas)

Manicurist/Pedicurist – performs cosmetic treatment on fingernails (manicure) and toenails (pedicure)

Nail Technician – specializes in fingernail and toenail art and the care of it

Shampoo Technician – preps the client’s hair for shampooing and conditioning) by the hair stylist

No matter where you live, becoming a professional in the beauty and cosmetology industry requires a certain amount of education and a state license before you can start working in a salon or spa, or open up your own beauty business. Every state in the US requires that you get a state license if you are planning on working as a personal appearance specialist. There are always exceptions involved as each state’s licensing requirements as well as those for certification tend to vary somewhat.

For instance, you may not have to be licensed as a shampoo technician in order to be one and perform all the duties of one. However, the basic requirements are that you are least 17 years of age, have taken beauty school courses, and graduated from an accredited beauty academy. You may have to complete an apprenticeship or pass a physical in some states but not in others.

Finally, some states require that you be a high school graduate while others will settle for an 8th grade education. Still others will recognize an apprenticeship as a substitute for either type of education requirements. One way or the other, education and/or experience go hand in hand and are a critical part of the process.

What is an Esthetician and what do they do?

An Aesthetician is basically a licensed and trained skin treatment professional who specializes in beautifying the skin yet is not a doctor or medical personnel. They are also referred to as skin care therapists as many people turn to them in order to feel better about their appearance. They are also allowed to treat mild cases of acne by performing deep pore cleansing and are allowed to treat more severe cases when they are working in a doctor’s office under the supervision of that physician.

Since estheticians are not licensed medical professionals, they are not allowed to diagnose any conditions of the skin, prescribe medications for skin conditions, or suggest any type of treatment for it other than recommending certain beauty and cosmetic products. There are numerous cosmetic procedures that estheticians typically perform. However, the most common procedures that they specialize in are:

acne treatments (see above)

body treatments (referred to as body facials)

facials

spa treatments

waxing

Aestheticians offer an assortment of spa treatments and are found working in day spas, medical spas, and salons. Medical spas are what the name implies. They are basically a combination of a day spa and a medical clinic. Some estheticians work closely with dermatologists as well.

How to become an Aesthetician

No matter what state the Aesthetician lives and works in, they must be licensed by that particular state in order to practice their trade there. Depending on the requirements of the state, they may be required to complete anywhere from 260 to 600 hours of education and training. They must pass a practical (hands-on) and/or written exam and in addition to all of this, they must complete numerous hours of post-graduate studies and always attempt to stay informed regarding market trends in the beauty industry.

What is a make-up artist and what do they do?

A make-up artist uses the human body as their palette by applying a variety of make-up and prosthetics in such professions as fashion, film, magazines, modeling, theater, and TV. Numerous awards are given to make-up artists including the prestigious “Academy Award for Make-up” as well as the Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Some make-up artists prefer to remain self-employed while others may work for production companies, the theater, or TV stations. As a result, salaries in this profession can vary considerably.

Annual salaries of make-up artists

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average starting hourly pay for a make-up artist as of 2010 was $10 to $14 per hour, depending on the state you were working in. The average salary range for a make-up artist is between $45,000 and $48,000 while the middle 50% of all the make-up artists in the US are earning anywhere from $20,000 to $60,000 annually.

The top 10% of the wage earners are earning roughly $95,000 per year. The motion picture and video industries pay an average of $86,000 annually. Consequently, the performing arts also pay higher than what the average salary is, but considerably lower than the motion picture and video industry does. As of 2010, the average annual salary was right around $57,000.

How to become a make-up artist

Despite the fact that there are no specific educational requirements for becoming a make-up artist, going to a cosmetology school and attaining your certification is still the recommended course of action. The following recommendations for how to become a make-up artist should be considered once you have gotten your certification:

Attain the necessary education needed at a beauty, cosmetology, or make-up specialty school.

Get some work experience by starting in the retail cosmetics industry and learn about the different make-up techniques and products in a hands-on environment.

Start thinking about where you want to go with your experience and build a career plan. That will get you started moving in the right direction.

Go out and get your first job whether it is with a production company, in a salon or theater, or as a self-employed make-up artist on a contractual basis.

The course is focused on hands-on makeup application and creative makeup techniques Call for upcoming start dates or fill-in the form to receive an email with all the latest course information.

What is a cosmetologist?

A person who is educated in the field of beauty and specializes in treating the hair, nails, or skin is most commonly referred to as a cosmetologist. They not only take care of their clients, they recommend or offer suggestions regarding the best colors of cosmetics and the proper application of them, as well as recommending hairstyles and skincare options. The cosmetic specialist who has advanced skills can perform therapeutic massages and other treatments. Finally, they can advise their clients how to care for the hair, nails, and skin in between visits to the salon.

Cosmetologist salary levels according to experience and geographic location

When you become a cosmetologist, your annual earnings will be influenced by two elements – experience and geographic location. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, based on the amount of experience you have attained, you can average between:

$13,000 and $30,000 with a minimum of 4 years experience

$14,000 and $31,000 with a minimum of 5 years experience

$18,000 and $37,000 with at least 10 years of experience

Additionally, the state that you are working in can influence your annual salary as well. You would think that cosmetologists in the state of California would earn more than in any other state in the US because of how concerned people are about their appearance there. But the following statistics prove otherwise:

annual earnings in Tennessee run between $19,000 and $32,000

annual earnings in California run between $20,000 and $36,000

annual earnings in North Caroline run between $30,000 and $40,000

annual earnings in Florida earn up to $59,000

Surprisingly, the state of Florida offers some of the highest wages in the country and is nearly double what the California make-up artist earns.
